All you need to know about travelling on board MV Sheerwater.

MV Sheerwater is a passenger boat with a capacity of 80. The sturdy vessel features an outdoor seating area, some of which is covered by a canopy, allowing fresh air to flow freely. The seating is close enough to the water to give passengers a sense of connection with nature during wildlife sightings. Indoor seating is also available.

When do the boat trips start?

Scheduled sailings run from mid April – end of August.

I’ve not been to any of the islands before.  Which one do you recommend?

Our timetable includes sailings to Eigg, Muck, and Rum.  Each of these three islands boasts its own unique charm, making it a challenge for us to recommend just one.  To make an informed decision yourself, you can view detailed information about each of the Small Isles: → Visit Small Isles

Are there cafes and places to eat on the islands?

Yes, there are cafes on Eigg and Muck.  On Rum there is a general store, from which you can buy food.  You can also order food right here at the marina cafe, to take on board the ferry.  We serve breakfast and lunch.

Can I visit multiple islands in one day?

No, it is not possible to have time on each island in one day, you must choose only one.  The ferry will stop briefly on Eigg between sailings to Muck and Rum, before continuing the journey.

Is there an option to island-hop?

Yes, is possible to travel between the islands.  There is plenty of accommodation to stay overnight or spend a few nights on each island.

Can I take luggage on board?

Our capacity on the Sheerwater is limited by both weight and passenger numbers. Passengers staying overnight on the islands and carrying more than one small day bag must book and pay for luggage in advance of departure.  Only passengers who collect a luggage token from the office at check-in, will be allowed to load luggage onto the vessel.

Where can I park?

There is parking available at in the Marina, which is free for day-trippers.  If you’re staying overnight on any of the islands then you must buy a permit, which costs £4.50 per night or £30 per week.  Overnight sleeping/camping in any vehicle is not permitted.  Please be considerate when parking.  Park close to other vehicles, not leaving large gaps in between.

How do I buy a day-return ticket?

On our booking platform, you can conveniently purchase both the outbound and return tickets simultaneously during booking.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, it is advisable to book in advance, but it’s not essential.  We can fill up quite fast during peak times.

How long before departure do I need to be there?

We suggest you check in no later than 30 minutes before departure time.  Boarding will commence 20 mins before departure.

Where do I pick up my tickets?

Tickets will be emailed to you, with a QR code boarding pass.  Please remember to check in at the ticket office on the morning of your sailing before you board.

Can I book on the day?

While it is advisable to book in advance, there may be tickets on the morning of the sailing.  Please check with the ticket office.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, dogs are permitted on board at no cost, as long as they have been booked.  Dogs need to be kept on the outer deck, and on a short lead at all times.

Can I bring a bike?

Bikes can be taken on board at a cost of £5 per journey.  There is a maximum of 6 bikes per sailing.  Please note we are not able to accept electric bikes on board, due to our conditions of carriage.  You are responsible for lifting your bike up to the crew above the wheelhouse.

Is there an indoor area?

Yes, there is sheltered indoor seating as well as outdoor seating.

Can I buy tea or coffee on board?

Yes, tea and coffee are available to purchase on board (cash only please), along with snacks and sweets.  Our takeaway cafe also has food and hot and cold drinks available, which can be taken on board with you.

I have mobility issues can I travel aboard the boat?

There is no disabled access to board MV Sheerwater. However, depending on circumstances and the passenger’s capabilities it may be possible to accommodate individuals with mobility issues by prior arrangement with the Marina staff.

Are there toilets on board?

Yes, there is a toilet for passengers on board.

Do I have to wear a lifejacket?

Lifejackets are not required to be worn on board; however, we are fully equipped in the event of an emergency.
